Nigger

David is fired up to preach the word of God in Skegness with Ray, Angela and Elaine. As he walks through the holiday town they are confronted by one hundred skinheads.

‘Nigger and Black Bastards,’ ring out in the atmosphere and he stands with the police between him and the racists calling for his blood. A skinhead throws a fifty pence coin and it hits David in the forehead, drawing blood. He wants to throw it back but drops it into his grey jacket pocket as the police who are unhelpful quickly escort him and his friends away from the skinheads. David is angry and as the fury rises inside of him he wants retribution. Angela, who fancies him calms him down and he walks along the road with Ray lolling behind and in a world of his own.

David hears the thuds of red Doc Marten boots and he screams, “Ray, run, run.” He runs with Angela and Elaine, looking behind and only seeing the dust from his shoes and Ray is nowhere to be seen. The police sirens whir and scream and David is told that Ray has been found. He kicks open the door of the police van and runs to the spot where Ray is laying with stab wounds and blood soaking through the cracked pavement of Mercy Way.

Red Heat
